What is relationship-based lactation consulting?
Sweet friends,
“Relationship-based lactation consulting” isn’t a big fancy credential or accredited style. It’s just simply how I practice-and, it’s how I practice because it’s what I didn’t have when I needed it most with my own kiddos.
I know how not having a genuine relationships with trusted updated-supporters who actually knew what I was experiencing impacted how I sought care during my early days as a new mother. I also know what it feels like to have tried seeking this type of care to no avail. I remember how overwhelming having five different opinions for one issue was, and I remember how much I wished that I just had one steady person to help me make sense of it all…
While many clients don’t need me for more than a consult, all of my clients know that I am always there for them (with boundaries, of course) —to listen to their stories and understand their family’s routines, and to meet their affirmations and anxieties where they are. I believe that parents are the experts on their pregnancies and babies, and I exist as merely a person who helps them piece together and often recignize what they likely already know and feel yet may not have a name for yet.
Families who seek me out will never ever, ever be told not to Google (yet I may show you how to interpret search results), or patronize them with “Oh honeys.” or “Just keep tryings.”. Families who trust me with their support won’t receive rulesy guidance and cutesy catch-phrases. Instead they’ll receive affection, observation, recommendations, options, vetted resources and follow-up.
While I’m only an expert on my own kids, I know a thing or two about post-partum life, breastfeeding, developmental milestones, the educational realm and on raising two generations of kids within unique societal landscapes. Regardless of your feeding choices or outcomes, my goal in knowing you is to model parenting a little, and to help you understand your baby’s first days, so that all the next days come instinctively.
I look super forward to being your very breast friend!
💜,
Laura
